Contest February 02, 2008

Today we held two contests at the field. Contest number one was for
electric sailplanes only. I gave 'stock' canned motors a 40 second motor
run while the 'hotter' brushless planes had a 20 second motor run. The
first round featured a mass launch of all planes. The object was not to be
the first two to land as they were eliminated. We repeated this until the
final group was launched. The group was Greg Clemensen, Mac Crockett and
Ray DiNoble. The winner also won the privilege of staging the next electric
contest ! It was close but Mac edged out both Ray and Greg and will be the
next electric contest director (CD). We had a bunch of non-fliers and
spectators enjoying the fun.

The sailplane contest went well. We had 9 pilots signup. Unfortunately Tod
Anderson lost his EZG in the first round and had to drop out. The task was
simple and the scoring was simple. 5 rounds of 5 minutes plus a landing in
the 20 foot circle. Everyone started with 1000 points. One point per second
for being over or under 5 minutes was subtracted from the 1000 and landing
outside of the circle subtracted an additional 10 points. We only scored 13
landing inside the circle. In typical sailplane fashion, landings are
important. Practice those landings guys.

The conditions were not the best but very tolerable - about 50 degrees,
almost no wind but 100% cloud cover. Anything over 2 1/2 -3 minutes was
flying skill. The scores show 23 flights over 3 minutes, out of the
possible 34 total flights (Rick had to drop out of the last round with stab
problems).

I want to thank everyone who flew and/or helped today. Bill Milliron was
the 'official' starter/timer for the electric event while he and Bill Vail
assisted in the sailplane event by timing many flights. Tibor did a good
job as winch master for the sailplane event. The sailplane scores are shown
below.
